Artist's Comments

For *Shouten-Samurai's contest, theme: zombies and fantasy.

Thanks all who gave me critiques, y'all are the best! ^_^
I tried to fix up all the points you mentioned (and failed a bit OTL), but I started to get frustrated with the lightness/ darkness point. >_< I know a bunch of you thought it looked to dark.. but on my monitor it looks to light! D: ..needless to say this made fixing it rather difficult. XD
Either way, I hope it's more legible now.

Pfff, oh well, I think it looks fairly decent considering it's so much of an experimental piece... of course by that I mean it could look worse. Y'know, like how it looked before I uploaded the new one. XD I actually really like the concept of this. Someday when I'm better I'll come back and revisit this and maybe I'll be able to execute my idea better. Because I do like the idea, just... hmm my drawing..

Of course I didn't bs those last two buildings, they were just poorly built~~ ;D

Ah, finding your happy place. Every teen goes through it.
While looking at the piece, the choice of atmosphere is well made in putting on the right tone for the character's emotional state of confusion (if that was the initial intent), also, the umbral contrast beneath the character adds a sense of forboding danger or a dismal sense of hope for what seems a dark and gloom filled story...it doesn't help that he has bat wings, especially with child prejudice at school...bastard thug of a bully. :x

In conclusion: A captivating piece that tells a story right from the get go. These are the best kind of art pieces, ones that evolve as more people try to enterpret them in their own way, sharing ideas on stories that this piece would inspire writers to make. Truly an excellent gift for anyone in the career path of an artist. Well done.

The linear perspective on this piece works well to draw your eye to the character and the silhouette of the figure is very striking. It creates a very dynamic and dramatic scene, and the mood and intensity of it is very well translated. However, you sort of lose the wings against the background - making the membranous sections more transparent or outlining the edges with the white of the moon will help contrast and define the figure and wings so you don't lose it. Throwing some of those highlights on the buildings could help set the tone of the piece, as well as tie it all together as a work.

Thanks.
Yeah that was Nami's critique too, but there isn't much detail going on to see. >-< it probably doesn't help that it's so tiny either..
I'm thinking of lightening up the shadows on his legs so I can make it more ... umm what ever the term for 'legible' is in drawings.. anyways, so it can be seen better.

Very cool and dramatic art! :) The pose seems to say, "What have I become?" Or he is overlooking his city. I really like how the moon light hits your character, and casts the long shadow. Those wings look pretty neat too!

Thank you. :D
That is a perfect interpretation, it is his reaction to getting the wings (and many more issues XD). :D

I personally don't think the level of darkness takes /too/ much away from the piece.
I think it adds to the mood, and enhances the overall image, rather than taking away.

However, do keep in mind that black is a very overpowering color, and takes approximately twice as much white/nonblack to balance it out.

Shadows, I would also like to remind you, are not always pure black. As an artist, I find it somewhat irritating that the long black shadow casted downwards is all black. Light bouncing off other surfaces should lighten up part of the shadow that is further away from the object blocking the light. (aka the shadow part that's closer to us) There should be streaks of purple-grey that lighten up the harsh black in the shadow coming towards us, as well as a tiny bit on the darkest sides of the buildings.

Hope this helped some. (:
